MUSC Invites SC Students to Enter Free 5th Annual Student Poetry Contest

MUSC are pleased to announce the 5th Annual MUSC Septima P. Clark Student Poetry Contest & Awards Ceremony and ask your help in spreading the word to K-12 students.

This contest is free of charge to enter, and each year we celebrate the top student poets in each category with an awards reception, prizes, and a reading of their poems. This is a great opportunity to shine on a spotlight on your teachers and students, and to contribute to community literacy through a statewide public poetry project.

This is MUSC's fifth year for this collaboration with Charleston’s first Poet Laureate Marcus Amaker.

The contest theme is "Unity in the Community:  A World Connected."

Poetry submissions will be accepted from elementary school (grades K-5), middle school (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12) students across the state of South Carolina.

The 2023 submission portal will be open from January 17 thru March 15.

Finalists will be invited to read their poems as part of the hybrid Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 28, 2023, featuring national speaker and Charleston native, Chris Singleton. The reception will take place on the MUSC campus in Charleston, but attendance is optional in person or online via Zoom.

Finalists for each category will be announced in April 2023. First place prizes will include a Chromebook, hover board, and bicycle. Advanced registration *free* but required for planning purposes. The virtual event link will be emailed 24 hours prior to the event to those who register.
